Each one carries where it came from. Search it yourself. Nothing here asks you to take our word for anything.
Two kinds of passage. Checked means a person read it in the file and dated it. Everything else is a candidate: the search found it, nobody vetted it. Some candidates are false alarms — "dung" is also a heat source, "repeat" turns up in chemistry manuals.
Dates. Pre-1800 or modern refers to when the text was composed. Many old texts survive only in Victorian English, so an old idea can arrive in modern wording. Spelling and typos are left exactly as the books have them.
Why it matters: "our gold is not the common gold" is a chemical claim in every pre-1800 witness we read. Reading alchemy as inner transformation is mostly a story that begins in 1850. The filters below let you check that yourself.
